What we fix

Organized by what you notice, since that's where every call starts. Each entry lists the parts and conditions most often behind it.

Cooling

Air conditioners and heat pumps in cooling mode.

  • Air is blowing, but it isn't cold

Low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty outdoor coil, or a failed capacitor keeping the compressor from starting.Refrigerant · coil · compressor

  • The outdoor unit hums, but the fan doesn't spin

A weak start capacitor, a stuck contactor, or a worn condenser fan motor.Electrical · fan motor

  • Water pooling around the indoor unit

A clogged condensate drain line, a cracked or overflowing drain pan, or an evaporator coil that froze and is thawing.Drain line · evaporator coil

  • Ice on the copper refrigerant lines

Not enough air moving across the indoor coil — a clogged filter or blower problem — or a low refrigerant charge.Airflow · refrigerant

Heating

Gas furnaces and heat pumps in heating mode.

  • The furnace won't light, or lights and shuts off

A worn igniter, a dirty flame sensor, a pressure switch that isn't closing, or a blocked vent.Ignition · safety controls

  • The heat pump blows cool air in winter

Defrost controls, a sticking reversing valve, or a low refrigerant charge.Defrost · reversing valve

  • The system turns on and off every few minutes

Short cycling: a clogged filter, a flame sensor, an overheating limit switch, or a thermostat in a bad spot.Limit switch · thermostat

Airflow and controls

The parts that move air and tell the system what to do, in any season.

  • Some rooms are much hotter or colder than others

Leaky or disconnected ducts, closed or blocked vents, or a blower running at the wrong speed.Ductwork · blower

  • The thermostat is blank or doesn't respond

Dead batteries, a loose wire, a tripped float switch, or a blown fuse on the control board.Thermostat · control board

  • Squealing, grinding, or banging when it runs

Worn blower motor bearings, a loose blower wheel, or a panel or duct section that's come loose.Blower · cabinet
